AI-guided formulation improves RNA vaccine heat stability in MIT study
MIT researchers used an AI-guided formulation to keep experimental RNA vaccines stable for up to a year at room temperature; immune responses were tested in mice.
MIT researchers used an AI algorithm to adjust the formulation around lipid nanoparticles that deliver RNA vaccines. The approach reduced the number of experiments needed to identify more heat-resistant candidates.
Reported formulations remained stable for up to a year at room temperature or two months near 100°F. In mice, a COVID-19 vaccine using the particles produced an immune response comparable to a reference RNA vaccine.
These experimental results do not yet establish routine clinical use or eliminate cold-chain requirements for commercial vaccines; further testing is needed.
