Paid AI has only just reached about 2% of US households
A comparative chart says about 2.2% of US households pay for AI, but its metric is not fully equivalent to the adoption measures used for older technologies.
A comparative infographic places paid AI at the beginning of its mass-adoption curve. According to the figure attributed in the chart to April 2026, about 2.2% of US households pay for AI tools.
The same chart estimates how long several technologies took to move from roughly 2% to 50% adoption: about 6.5 years for smartphones, 7.5 years for the internet, 15 years for cars, and 19 years for computers. No corresponding time is available for AI; the graphic labels it as being at “year zero.”
The comparison requires caution because the measures are not identical. It uses vehicle registrations relative to households for cars, mostly household shares for computers and the internet, mobile subscribers or adults for smartphones, and paying households for AI. The historical figures therefore provide context, but they do not predict how quickly AI will reach 50% adoption.
