Jensen Huang says China now leads in parts of AI

Nvidia’s CEO argues that the AI race is no longer one-sided, pointing to China’s strength in research, patents and science and technology education.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has argued that China is no longer merely catching up in artificial intelligence and has become advanced in a number of fields.

He was quoted as claiming that 50% of the world’s AI researchers are Chinese, that China accounted for 70% of AI patents published last year, and that nine of the world’s top ten science and technology schools are now in China. The circulated material does not identify the underlying datasets or ranking, so these figures should be read as claims attributed to Huang rather than independently verified statistics.

Huang described China’s AI ecosystem as vibrant, rich and highly innovative. He also said China now leads in many areas where the United States previously held the lead. His broader point is that the international AI race can no longer be viewed as one-sided.
