OpenAI reports alleged Russian and Iranian influence operations
OpenAI says Russian and Iranian operatives used ChatGPT for deceptive outreach and fabricated publishing campaigns, and that related accounts were banned.
Reports describe coordinated misuse of ChatGPT
According to internal reports released by OpenAI, Russian operatives used ChatGPT in a campaign targeting schools in Peru. They allegedly posed as a regional education authority and sought to persuade schools to hold Ukraine-related events.
The reports also say Iranian operatives used seven fake authors to publish nearly 100 articles in outlets including Daily Kos. OpenAI says it banned the Russian and Iranian accounts associated with the activity.
These are claims from the company’s reports and do not, by themselves, establish the full scope or impact of the campaigns. They nevertheless illustrate how language models can be used for impersonation, content production and campaign coordination, underscoring the need for coordinated-abuse detection and account controls.
